Big tuna, little boats by Alistair McGlashan

This is the first of a new column that will be dedicated to catching big fish out of little boats. Unlike the typical reports in Fishing Monthly that are localised, we're going to take a different tack and instead of focusing on one spot, we'll follow the bite.

Game fish like tuna, marlin and sharks ride the fickle ocean currents along the Victorian and NSW, coming and going at their leisure.

Most importantly, I am all about trailer boats and in due course I will be running my new Haines Hunter 600R up and down the coast, keeping everyone informed on what is happening as well as predicting what is going to happen. On top of telling you where all the action is, I will also endeavour to keep you abreast of the latest techniques.

The talk of the town at present is the sensational tuna fishing off Sydney. Last year we took advantage of the prolific tuna fishing, filming the entire Strikezone Tuna Time in just a few weeks, and this year the fishing is set to be even better.

Bermagui reported its best tuna season in a number of years with a string of fish over 60kg and even some rippers up to 80kg. Sydney started the ball rolling with 80kg specimens and the fishing has been nothing short of sensational since.
