Get set for Searunners by Phillip Ellerton

While Tasmania is well know for its lake and stream trout fishing options, less known outside of Tasmania is the magnificent searun trout fishery.

Locals anticipate this event like no other; the size of the fish, the spectacle of trout smashing bait and the sheer unpredictability of the whole show causes searun fever!

Searun trout enthusiasts eagerly wait for the months of October and November as the estuaries fill with whitebait. The trout seem to come from everywhere to gorge themselves on their favourite food sources.

The action can be fast and furious as trout to 5lb, (even 10lb) lay in ambush prior to exploding in a shower of spray as they attempt to grab a mouthful of these tasty morsels.

The Tasmanian angler has a plethora of options when it comes to sea trout, with the west coast and the south of the state having some of the more recognized fisheries. The north and east aren't forgotten either, with some excellent waterways giving up massive trout every year.
