The Moruya River looked more like the Murray River as I made my way towards the seaward tip of the southern breakwall.

More than 150mm of rain in the past 24 hours had turned the normally turquoise waters of my favourite estuary a deep shade of chocolate. It didn't look particularly fishy, yet my anticipation was as high as ever as approached the river mouth.

A big fresh makes the majority of the Moruya River - and other South Coast estuaries such as the Clyde, Shoalhaven and Tuross systems - virtually unfishable for at least a day or two. Around the entrance, however, it's another story...
