'Top of the box' MEGA cod lures

by Rod MacKenzie

What's the best Murray cod lure? If you came up with an immediate answer to this question, chances are your lurefishing is hampered somewhat by tunnel vision. That, or the area you fish is a consistent depth with minimal variation in bottom structure.

Having been asked this question countless times, there's only one honest answer: there is no one single lure that's best, there are many. There are certainly lures I lean towards, but they are mixed into groups that hold prominent positions in the top shelves of my lure box. Most of these lures are missing paint and sporting other telltale battle scars that are the calling card of the giant green jaws that have tried to devour them!

Covering the whole spectrum of scenarios faced when targeting these awesome freshwater sportfish requires a number of lures to achieve the best results. Most anglers who fish the Murray River are aware of the ever-changing depth, current and structure with which they have to contend. Quite simply, whether casting or trolling, one lure can't service every situation encountered.
